Visa sold on stop loss

The market is losing ground and slipping into correction. Visa (V) once again is dragged down with banks even though this company is not a bank. Another deep drop of this stock triggered my stop loss and I sold my shares of this stock. However, I still consider this stock as a high quality equity and I am ready to buy back on reversal.

TSTC sold on stop loss trigger

Telestone Technologies Corp. (TSTC) triggered stop loss order this morning and has been sold:

01/21/2010    11:33:43    Sold  19  TSTC  @  17.78

Today’s move on the market also counts as another sell off (distribution day) and puts the market under the pressure. That means I am raising cash and waiting for the next move. Will the market slip into correction or is it just a dip?

The market is once again over-reacting on the news and what was good for the market yesterday is not good for it today anymore. Even though the market is still in a rally, on Friday we could see a distribution day on heavy volume. It may mean nothing, it may create a short time dip (the market was rallying for long time and it is time to get some rest) or it may reverse for a correction. We will see next week. I am not going to predict the market but try to react on what it will be doing in upcoming weeks.

My stocks, however, were losing ground during last two weeks. Some were sold by triggering stop loss, such as Medifast Inc. (MED) and those stocks are not on my screen anymore. Also when I evaluated them whether they pass my “buy checklist”, they haven’t get through either. So I am moving on. I will be watching those stocks for a while, but it seems there is no momentum anymore.

The portfolio lost almost 8% this week (a paper loss only), which is an evidence that I broke my rules once again. I bought Telestone Technologies Corp. (TSTC) the previous week even though I shouldn’t do it because my portfolio was over-invested already and my maximum risk increased to almost 16%. Partially, I made a mistake when I was buying the new position because I didn’t update my spreadsheet and ran my risk calculations using old data. I adjusted my trading rules properly to update my spreadsheet first and then run calcs. I am speaking about it because every beginning investor or trader should write the rules down on the paper and repeat them as long as you start doing it all mechanically and without thinking. Even this small issue can cause quite a large loss. I also reduced my total loss for the trade from 3% of the portfolio to 2% only.
